Metal that fell through roof of home not from aircraft
A 3½-pound piece of metal that fell through the roof of a far northwest suburban home Friday did not come from an aircraft.
No one was hurt when the piece of metal fell into the home on the 200 block of Orleans Street in Carpentersville. It was discovered in a bathroom by the homeowner shortly before 4 p.m. Friday.
The metal was a grinding bit from a landscaping business located about 400 feet from the home, said Carpentersville Police Cmdr. Tim Bosshart. He said the bit, which is used to turn trees, wood and other material into mulch, became detached from its machine, and was flung through the roof at high speed.
Tradespeople who recognize how that piece of metal is used saw it pictured on a television newscast of the story, Bosshart said, and told police it could not have come from an aircraft.

Mother denied bail in slaying of infant daughter

A woman accused of killing her 7-month-old girl at their Far Southeast Side home last year was denied bail today.
Vanessa Urbina , 23, was charged late Friday with first-degree murder in the July 2009 killing of her daughter, Isaly Navia, Chicago police said.
Urbina appeared for her bond hearing before Cook County Criminal Court Judge Adam Bourgeois wearing a navy blue pea coat and jeans. She walked away from the courtroom trying to hold back tears, and scowling.
About 5 p.m. on July 24, authorities were called to Urbina's home in the 10600 block of South Avenue E and Isaly was taken in critical condition to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, police said. At the time, Urbina had sole custody of the baby, and was watching Isaly by herself, police said.

South Side Irish Parade: Gone, not forgotten
Inside the Beverly Arts Center today, young children had shamrocks painted on their faces and decorated "Blarney stones" with glitter and glue.
It was the beginning of a new tradition for many families who for years had attended the South Side Irish Parade, which organizers cancelled last year after about 300,000 people packed the city's Irish enclave, drunkenness was rampant and nearly a dozen police officers were assaulted.
Kathleen Herber grew up in Beverly and had looked forward to passing on the parade tradition to her 1-year-old daughter, Anna. Instead, she took her daughter on Saturday to the South Side Irish Parade Family Fest, created out of the parade's demise.
"I miss the parade," she said. "I wish it was back this year, obviously. But we're trying to give this a try and bring back the spirit and tradition that usually accompanies the annual parade."
The event at the Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St., is featuring an Irish soda bread contes...

Weather causes airline delays at O'Hare
This morning's rainy weather and low clouds are causing some flight delays at O'Hare International Airport, according to the FAA.
A weather-related traffic management program was in effect, resulting in some arriving flights at O'Hare being delayed by almost 3 hours, according to the FAA Web site just before 2 p.m.
Some departing flights were also expected to be delayed because of the slowed inbound flights, according to the FAA.
A Chicago Aviation Department hotline, reported delays of about an hour at O'Hare about 1 p.m., with longer delays for flights headed to the East Coast. There were no reported delays at Midway International Airport.

Woman, child killed crossing in front of Metra train
A woman and a toddler were hit by a train as the woman tried to cross railroad tracks at the North Chicago Metra station this morning while carrying the child, authorities said.
The woman was declared dead at the scene and the child was taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan following the accident, said Lake County Coroner Richard Keller. The child was declared dead about noon at the hospital, Keller said. The woman was carrying the girl when she was struck by the train, North Chicago fire officials said in a prepared statement.
Officials gave conflicting ages for the child between 1 and 2 years old.
The woman was crossing the tracks at the south end of the Metra Station, 1633 Lakeside Ave. in the north suburb, a little before 9 a.m. when the crash happened, said Metra spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet. The woman crossed from the west side of the tracks to get to the station on the east side just behind a group of other people, but...

Weekend weather: Cloudy, wet, windy and cool
This morning's cloudy, wet weather is expected to persist into Sunday, dampening this weekend's pre-St. Patrick's Day festivities, although the chance of rain will go down as the weekend wears on, forecasters predict.
Today will be the cooler, more rain-soaked day, with temperatures in the mid-40s and winds of 15 to 25 m.p.h. and gusts of 40 m.p.h., according to the National Weather Service. The chance of rain in the Chicago area is 70 percent today, but the downtown Chicago forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of showers. Rain will moderate in the afternoon, says Tom Skilling, chief meteorologist for WGN-TV and the Tribune.
The fog dominating the lakefront early today should lift somewhat as the day warms up, although local areas could still see dense fog until later in the morning.
Tonight's temperatures are expected to be in the upper 30s. Sunday will remain cloudy, with a 20 percent chance of light showers and slightly warmer weather, with highs in the upp...
